The Dell UPS Local Node Manager (ULNM) is the DELL solution to automate virtualized IT system
responses to power events as follows:
• Continuously monitors the incoming AC power status
• Warns administrators and users if AC power fails
• Shuts down the system before the end of battery backup power is reached
• Restarts machines when AC power restarts
VMware ESXi does not have an administrative console and we cannot install Dell ULNM on that
machine. However, we can install the Dell ULNM on VMware Infrastructure Management Assistant
(VIMA) version 1.0, or on vSphere Management Assistant (vMA) version 4.0. Using that, we can manage
and shutdown the VMware ESXi in case of UPS and power anomalies.
We can also configure ESXi to safely suspend or shut down guest operating systems. This way, we can
have only one Dell ULNM shutdown agent on only one guest operating system (VIMA, vMA).
Installing the Dell ULNM client on the VIMA, vMA instead of each virtual machine (VM) provides the
following benefits:
• Only one binary of Dell ULNM client on the VIMA/ vMA to manage all VMs.
• Dynamic management of VM configuration with a personalized script.
See Figure 86 for a configuration diagram of a VMware architecture.
