Explanation

Backlight compensation: Exposure compensation to prevent a backlight

phenomenon. Backlight refers to the effect of a subject becoming
dark when a large amount of light enters the lens.

Exif (Exchangeable Image File format): A full-color still-image file format

for digital still cameras approved by the Japan Electronics and
Information Technology Industries Association (JEITA). Exif is
compatible with JPEG and TIFF and can be handled by most image
processing software applications for PCs.

Format: The process of configuring the content of hard disk drive or SD

card so that it can be used to record data (also known as initializing).

FULL SPEED MODE: A USB mode supported by the “USB2.0” and

“USB1.1” standards. Uses a data transfer rate of 12Mb/sec.

HIGH SPEED MODE: A USB mode supported by the “USB2.0” standard.

Uses a data transfer rate of 480Mb/sec.

JPEG: A file format used for compressing and saving color images. The

compression ratio can be selected, but the higher the compression
ratio, the poorer the quality of the expanded image. Widely used on
the Internet and by painting applications for PCs.

MPEG: A file format for compressing video files that allows files containing

digital video and audio to be transferred efficiently.

MPEG-4 AVC/H.264: One of the standard video compression formats

established by ITU (International Telecommunication Union) and
ISO (International Organization for Standardization).

PictBridge: A communications standard for printing images via a direct

printer connection.
This allows devices to print by connecting directly to a PictBridge-
compatible printer via a USB cable. In addition to allowing settings
such as the number of prints to be specified on a digital camera,
PictBridge can be used for a range of functions.

White balance: A function that adjusts the color balance according to the

color of the ambient light around the subject so that white subjects
appear white in the photographed image.
