General remarks for recording and
mixing
Basic Principles
In multitrack recording, you always monitor the multitrack recorder’s outputs,
not its inputs. That is, to be on the safe side and have total control over what is
actually being recorded, you should monitor the signals returned from the
multitrack rather than the original signal source. Be sure to follow our advice
on page 17.
Recording
• Optimize the input signal levels —this is an important stage and you
should take time and care setting these levels. Listening to each channel in
turn, use the GAIN control and PAD switch to optimize the input signal
level. See to it that the SIGNAL indicator of the input module lights when­
ever a signal is being fed to that input, and that the PEAK indicator only
briefly lights when the signal reaches its maximum level.
• Clean up sounds and use dynamics processors —unwanted noise
and distortion reduce clarity, making the mix sound muddy and confused.
If you can’t eliminate noise problems at source, use EQ to cut it, or patch in
a noise gate. For input modules 9-16 (or 17-24), you can take advantage of
the CH INSERT (channel insert) feature to compress, limit, etc. the EQ’d
and ‘gained’ signal. If the input signal is routed to Group 7 or 8, you can con­
nect the effect to the GROUP INSERT 7-8 jacks.
• Assign to a GROUP — To monitor the signals using the meters, you
should assign them to a Group (Assign switches on each channel module)
and set the METER SELECT switches below the meters to the up position
Mixdown
This section describes a general RM800 mixdown session.
• Reset all controls- —turn down level controls, set PANs to center, reset all
assign switches and press the EQ switches on each input module so to bypass
the EQ.
• Set up your monitor —if you’re monitoring via headphones or the mon­
itor outputs, turn up the PHONES or CONTROL ROOM level control and
press the ST switch on the Stereo Module.
• Input or monitor assignment- as explained above, you should assign
the signals you wish to EQ and process using general effects to the ‘input sec­
tion’ of a channel. To do so, press the M/L TAPE switch at the top of that
module to match the input connector: up for MIC/LINE input and down
for the TAPE IN connector. The signal present at the ‘other’ (MIC/LINE or
TAPE IN) connector only allows level and pan adjustments using the
MONI/AUX 5-6 controls. Do not forget to assign the corresponding signal
