“Clam Shells” – MVP Pump Packing Removal Tools
The clam shells are tools to assist the removal of the packing in the center casting of the
resin pumps. Thee proper tool for your pump is supplied with the pump. The following
will explain their use:
1. Remove the piston cylinder from the bottom of the pump and the spring retainer
and spring above the pump piston.
2. Slowly apply air to the pump to raise the piston to the top of the stroke.
3. Insert clam shell sections into the hole around the piston rod at the bottom of the
oil well in the center casting, on half of the shell on either side of the piston rod.
4.
a. On HIS System pumps 10:1, 5:1, 7:1 or
4:1 pumps slowly apply air to the
powerhead. The slave arm will move
downward, pushing the clamshell down,
which will move the packing down and
out of the center casting.
b. On the HIS 5:1, 10:1, 11:1 and 22:1
transfer pumps, it is necessary to insert
45030-1
(ST-70)
rod (fig. 4B), which is
provided with pump, into the hole in the
piston rod, then slowly apply air to the
pump causing the rod to push down on
the clam shell, moving the packing down
and out of the center casting.
5. When packing is removed from the
pump, return the pump to the top of the
stroke. Remove the clam shells and
rod, if used, and install new packing.
Reinstall all the pump components
removed from the pump and the pump is
ready to reactivate.
