Planting

To get full performance from your planter, you
need a good understanding of coulter, row-unit
and press wheel operation.

Coulters (Optional)
Optional coulters are mounted directly ahead of
each row-unit. The coulters cut through heavy
trash and till a small strip so the row-units can
penetrate the soil easily. To maintain even seed-
ing depth, the coulters must cut even with or 1/4”
below the row-units.

Two coulter options are available, row unit mount-
ed or frame mounted.

Adjust coulters one-by-one when installing them
to get coulter depth even with the bottom of the
row-unit blades. Refer to “Coulter Adjustments,”
page 32, for information on how to make these
adjustments.

Row-Units
Each row-unit is mounted on the planters with
parallel arms. This parallel-action mounting al-
lows the row-unit to move up and down while
staying horizontal. Row-unit double disks widen
the coulter groove, making a seed bed. A seed
tube mounted between the disks delivers seed to
the trench. The down force needed to cut and wid-
en the coulter groove is supplied by four springs
nested in the parallel linkage. Adjusting these
springs changes row-unit down-force. Refer to
“Row-Unit Down Pressure,” page 33, for informa-
tion on how to make this adjustment.

Press Wheels
Attached to the rear of each row-unit is one of
several press-wheel options.

The press wheels close the furrow, gently press-
ing the soil over the seed to ensure good seed to
soil contact for even emergence. To provide con-
sistent seed firming, the press wheels are free to
move downward from their normal operating po-
sition. This system maintains pressing action
even if the row-unit arm is lifted when the disks
encounter obstructions. For press wheel adjust-
ments refer to “Adjustments,” page 35.
