There are two conditions that indicate the self-test has failed. If the light on
the right flashes amber, you may need to clean the tape-drive head, as
described in the section “Cleaning the Tape-Drive Heads” later in this
chapter. Or, if a tape is loaded in the tape drive, a flashing amber light may
indicate that the tape is worn and needs to be replaced. If the light on the
right becomes solid amber, the tape drive did not successfully complete its
self-test and should not be used; consult an Apple-authorized service
provider.

The status lights are discussed in greater detail later in this chapter.

Inserting tape cassettes

To use a cassette:

Insert it into the tape slot in the front panel of the server, as shown in
this figure:

As you insert the cassette, the drive pulls it into place and performs a
loading sequence, which includes threading and rewinding the tape and
checking for error conditions. The loading procedure takes about 30
seconds.
