Appendix B

Special Keys on Your Keyboard

Your server keyboard contains certain special keys that typewriter
keyboards don’t have. Many of these keys allow you to give commands to
the server without using the mouse. For example, in many application
programs, pressing the x (Command) key at the same time as the Q key is
often an alternative method of quitting a program.

The following table describes what you can do with the special keys on
your keyboard. The number of special keys on your keyboard may vary
from this list; it depends on the model of keyboard you have.

Special keys on Apple keyboards

Arrow keys

Use to move the insertion point, as an alternative to using the
mouse to move the pointer. In some programs, the arrow keys
have other functions.

Caps Lock key

Use to capitalize a series of letters. (Numbers and symbols
aren’t affected.)

Clear key

Use to delete the current selection (or use the Delete key). In
some programs, Clear has other functions.

x

(Command) key

Use in combination with other keys as an alternative to
choosing a menu command.

Control key

In combination with other keys, this key provides shortcuts or
modifies other actions.

Delete key

Use to delete selected material, or the character to the left of
the insertion point.

Enter key

In a dialog box, pressing Enter is the same as clicking the
outlined button. In some programs, pressing this key confirms
information you have provided.
