NOTE: Initiator ports cannot communicate with hosts, but are used exclusively as XP Continuous
Access talkers. Ordinary target ports can be used only for host connect (not for XP Continuous
Access).
RCU target ports are (XP Continuous Access) dedicated Fibre Channel interface ports on the remote
disk array (RCU) to which MCUs (initiator ports) are connected. You can configure any Fibre
Channel interface port of the array as an RCU target port. For performance reasons, RCU target
ports should not be shared with host connects.
XP Remote Web Console
The Remote Web Console Java™ applet includes GUI operations for XP Continuous Access and
Hitachi TrueCopy for z/OS licensed software. The Remote Web Console communicates with the
SVP of the XP disk array via defined TCP/IP connections. For further information on Remote Web

If you plan to perform XP Continuous Access operations using XP RAID Manager (command-line
interface), you must use XP Continuous Access in Remote Web Console to add consistency groups
and select the desired group options and async options before you can add XP Continuous Access
pairs using RAID Manager. The former functions can only be performed using XP Remote Web
Console. Once the consistency groups and async options are configured, XP RAID Manager can
be used to establish and manage XP Continuous Access pairs.
If you plan to perform XP Continuous Access operations solely using XP Remote Web Console (not
XP RAID Manager), the MCU of each XP Continuous Access volume pair must be LAN-attached to
the Remote Web Console computer. You should also attach all RCUs to a Remote Web Console
PC on a separate LAN at the remote site. Having a separate LAN at the remote site enables you
to access the RCUs and XP Continuous Access S-VOLs and perform XP Continuous Access operations
at the remote site in the event that the main site is not available (for example, due to disaster). If
you need to perform XP Continuous Access operations in the reverse direction from the remote site
to the primary site (as for disaster recovery), XP Continuous Access software at the remote site
simplifies and expedites the process.
Host failover software
Host failover software, which transfers information between host servers at primary and remote
sites, is a critical component of any disaster recovery effort. Host failover is configured using the
host failover software product for the platform (such as Microsoft® Cluster Server or HP StorgeWorks
XP Cluster Extension Software), depending on your installation requirements and standards. XP
Remote Web Console does not provide host failover functions.
When XP Continuous Access is used as a data migration tool, host failover software is recommended
but not required. When XP Continuous Access is used as a disaster recovery tool, host failover is
required to ensure effective disaster recovery operations. When an XP Continuous Access pair is
suspended due to an error condition, the MCU generates sense information that should be
transferred to the remote site via host failover software for effective disaster detection and recovery.
Remote copy operations
There are two types of XP Continuous Access remote copy operations: initial copy and update
copy.
