Friction / Load Factor
Friction Measurement
This page only shows measurements and alarms . The configurations are
done on the Friction page under Parameter .
The Load Factor Values show the present Measured Value and drag
pointers for the Minimum Value, Maximum Value and the Average Value
over time .
The Alarm Factor Alarm Limits as well as the Load Factor / Friction Alarms
on this page are just for information and need to be configured on
the configuration page . These alarms are activated once the average
measurement has exceeded the alarm thresholds defined under the
upper and lower limit .
Set Reference Value (Set Ref.)
This function allows setting a fingerprint of a certain stem friction level (Average Reference) with a time stamp (Reference Time)
for the hours in operation . To set the Friction Reference:
1 . Click the Set Ref. button . This saves the Average Value in connection with the time-stamp (Reference Time) to the
positioner .
2 . To ensure that the positioner has saved the data, click Update .

Description / Explanation
Recommended Action
High Friction Alarm Service / Maintenance Required
The friction of the Stem packing
has increased and causes the stem
movement to change beyond the
specified maximum value .
Check the packing for irregularities .
Maybe the packing is just too tight .
Loosen the packing and use the Audit
Trail to inspect the movement .
Low Friction Alarm Service / Maintenance Required
The friction of the Stem packing has
reduced and causes the stem movement
to change below the specified minimum
value .
Check the packing for a possible
leakage . Tighten the packing and use
the Audit Trail to inspect the movement .
Friction History
The Friction History shows a Histogram displaying the duration of the average friction measurement over time . The duration
is illustrated in percent of the total time . The vertical line in the middle of the Friction History shows the Reference Value
(Average Value) within a variation of +/–5% .
The columns of the Histogram identify two states: To the left a decrease in friction (Less) and to the right an increase in friction
(More) is displayed . Color coding from green (=OK) to yellow (=Maintenance Required) and red (=Failure) indicate the state of
the friction .
The reference column shows the average value +/– 5% . The columns to both sides show friction changes such as:
• Less: –5…–25%, –25…–50% and –50…–100% decrease in friction
• More: 5…25%, 25…50% and 50…100% increase in friction
