the
i.LON 100 Internet Server as an RNI
Using the i.LON 100 Server as a Remote Network
Interface
The i.LON 100 server can be used as a remote network interface (RNI). This
allows the i.LON 100 server to take the place of a standard L
ON
W
ORKS
interface
(i.e. PCLTA-20, PCC-10, etc.). The LNS Server sends L
ON
W
ORKS
messages over
IP to the i.LON 100 server, which is connected to the rest of the L
ON
W
ORKS
network (either TP/FT-10 or PL-20 power line). This function can be performed
simultaneously with the application and Web server abilities of the i.LON 100
server. To use the i.LON 100 server as a remote network interface, you must
configure the xDriver software on your computer with the IP address or fully
qualified domain name of the i.LON 100 server. Once you have done this, the
i.LON 100 device will appear in the list of available network interfaces. The
following diagram shows an i.LON 100 server functioning as an RNI:
Installing and Configuring the xDriver Software
You can use the i.LON 100 Internet Server to communicate with an LNS Server,
Release 3.08, Update 1 or later. The LNS Server contains a software component
called the xDriver. If you are an LNS 3.0 user you may upgrade to version 3.08
by installing LNS Service Pack 8 and Update 1, which are available on the i.LON
100 CD and also as free downloads from www.echelon.com/downloads.
NOTE: If you are using Windows 98, the xDriver can only be used to initiate
downlink connections. Uplink connections can only be established using
Windows 2000 and Windows XP. See the LNS for Windows Programmer’s Guide,
xDriver Extension for more information.
Using The L

Interfaces Control Panel Applet
Use the L

interface names for each of your i.LON 100 Internet Servers. A separate entry is
required for each i.LON 100 server you plan to connect to the LNS Server
If you are managing a large application on a single LNS Server computer, and
will be using many i.LON 100 servers (i.e. more than 50), you should consider
creating an external lookup extension to keep track of each i.LON 100 server See
the LNS for Windows Programmer’s Guide, xDriver Extension for more
information on this.
