Chapter 11

Designing Your Own Document Templates

To create alignment guides on a page:

1

Go to the page to which you want to add the alignment guides.

2

Click outside the main body of your document so that the insertion point is not

visible.

3

Choose View > Show Rulers.

4

Place the pointer on a ruler and drag the blue alignment guide wherever you want on

the page. (You can change the color of the alignment guides using Pages

Preferences.)

Step 2: Defining Styles

A template must have default styles defined for the following elements of a

document:

 Paragraph styles

 Character styles

 List styles

 Table of contents styles

 Text box styles

 Shape styles

 Table styles

 Chart styles

 Text wrap around objects

You can customize any of these for the template you are creating, or you can use the

defaults that already exist in the template you started with (including the Blank

template).

To learn about creating paragraph styles, character styles, and list styles, see

Chapter 4, “Working With Styles.” To learn about creating styles for the table of

contents, see “Styling a Table of Contents” on page 103.
