Scan Size A function for specifying the scanning size of an original and transmitting it. When the pa-
per width on the recipient’s side is smaller than the paper size of the original that is sent,
normally the original is reduced and then printed. When the original is not to be reduced,
and the scan size is specified for the paper size on the recipient’s side, the original of the
original size can be sent.
Scanning The operation of optically scanning the original and converting it to image data.
Sending Making a call. The fax machine sends an original and dials for polling.
Sharpness This is a function to send an original by enhancing the edge of character.
Sub-scanning direction Vertical direction for scanning originals.
Super G3 (SG3) G3 communication mode standardized by ITU-T V. 34. The communication can be carried
out at a higher speed (high speed of 33,4000 bps) than that of usual G3 communication.
Temporary original sav-
ing This is a function for automatically saving the received original in the memory when the ma-
chine cannot print the received original, such as when the machine has run out of paper.
When more paper is added, the temporarily saved original is printed.
Timer TX A function for sending a fax at a specified time. It is economical to communicate at dis-
counted calling times, such as late at night or early in the morning.
Transmission reserve A function to reserve the next sending during transmission or while printing.
Sender name The name of this machine is indicated in alphanumeric characters. Name is printed as a
part of the transmission source at the edge of the transmitted original from the recipient’s
machine.

record When a fax is sent, the transmission time, name, telephone number, page number that is
to be printed at the edge of the original is saved on the recipient’s machine.
Transmission time The time required to send a fax. The higher the resolution or larger the paper, more time is
required for transmission.
V. 34 A communication mode used for fax communication of Super G3. When the recipient’s
machine or this machine is connected through a private switchboard, communication with
Super G3 mode may not be possible depending on the setup of the telephone line. In such
cases, fax can be sent after setting the Super G3 mode to Off by selecting V. 34 OFF.
Z-Folded Original A function to scan and send the original when the original size is confirmed for originals
whose original size cannot be correctly detected since there are a number of folds. This
function can be used only when the original is scanned by ADF.
