The DAS-100 Digital Audio Sampler is used to record monophonic or stereo audio
signals onto the hard disk of an IBM compatible computer's hard disk. From there they
can be burnt into EPROMs for installation in DR-100, DR-300, AB-100, AB-50 or DR-50
Digital Audio Repeaters for permanent audio playback installations.
The hardware part of the package consists of a 5" long Interface card which mounts
inside an IBM compatible computer. This provides the interface to the computer, I/O
buffering, and control for the Sampler. It is linked to the Sampler box by a 50 position
ribbon cable. It is in this box that the actual conversion between the Analog audio and
Digital computer signals takes place. This part of the system is mounted outside the IBM
case to optically isolate the audio signals from the electrically noisy environment inside an
IBM case, as well as to make it easier for you to get to its input and output plugs, volume
controls, and clipping indicator LEDs.
The software was written in C, with assembly language routines where speed is critical.
It allows you to record and play audio samples of up to an hour in length (limited only by
your hard disk capacity), remove areas of silence so that the samples will take less EPROM
space, view a graphical representation of the audio sample, print labels for the EPROMs,
and save the files for burning into EPROMs to the disk.
This manual assumes at least a working knowledge of the care and feeding of IBM
compatible computers. We assume when we tell you to install the interface card in the
computer or copy the software to the hard disk, you know how to do these things. If you
have managed to get an IBM hard disk up and running, you'll have no problems
installing the DAS-100, or wrestling alligators, or with any other challenges you might face
in the future.
