IBM System Storage DS6000 Series: Copy Services with IBM System z

31.6 TPC for Replication session types

There are two TPC for Replication editions, which include different levels of Copy Services
functions.

31.6.1 TPC for Replication Basic Edition

The Basic Edition also includes Metro Mirror and Global Mirror, besides FlashCopy.
However, Metro Mirror and Global Mirror are only configured to replicate data in a
unidirectional fashion.

FlashCopy

FlashCopy includes all functional flavors of FlashCopy. This includes FlashCopy with the
following:

Background copy or no background copy

Convert no background copy to background copy

Add persistent to a FlashCopy relationship

Establish incremental FlashCopy to apply only changed data since a previous FlashCopy
operation

Metro Mirror

Metro Mirror between a local site (site 1) and a remote site (site 2) in a unidirectional fashion.
It also allows to switch the replication direction from site 2 to site 1. This may happen through
Failover/Failback operations.

Global Mirror

Global Mirror implies three volumes for each Global Mirror Copy Set. Again this happens
between a local site (site 1) and a distant site (site 2) in a unidirectional way. It is possible to
reverse the replication direction but still only in a unidirectional fashion.

31.6.2 TPC for Replication Advanced Edition

The Advanced Edition has, in addition to the Basic Edition, the capability to replicate data in
either direction or in a bidirectional fashion.

Metro Mirror

Metro Mirror may be established from site 1 to site 2 or vice versa or in both directions at the
same time (bidirectional).

It also allows Failover/Failback operations for any Copy Set at any time.

Global Mirror

The Advanced Edition allows the Global Mirror to operate in either direction at the same time
(bidirectional). It may also swap sites with Failover/Failback operations.

Global Mirror builds on three volumes per Copy Set. TPC for Replication makes it possible to
also manage a configuration that only replicates data through Global Copy in the opposite
direction from what Global Mirror did before.
