System Overview
NewsBrowse is a media management and editing system. NewsBrowse supports the
complete newsroom workflow — from ingest to editing to distribution to archive.
This chapter includes the following topics:
• “Functional description” on page 9
• “System diagram - K2 storage” on page 11
• “System diagram - Profile XP or Open SAN storage” on page 13
Functional description
NewsBrowse allows the user to browse a low-resolution proxy copy of video material
from the desktop. NewsBrowse provides a rich metadata search engine that allows
you to search for clips using various criteria. You can also use the NewsBrowse
application to edit stories using the low-resolution proxy, which is accessible from the
journalist’s desktop. NewsBrowse creates various low-resolution proxy formats for
high-resolution material. Proxy formats include MPEG-1, video thumbnails, and
storyboards. From the NewsBrowse application you can also archive and restore
high-resolution material. Archived assets are still visible from the NewsBrowse
application.
The NewsBrowse system is compatible with both the K2 storage architecture and
Profile XP (Open SAN) storage architecture. For K2 systems, NewsBrowse provides
a NewsShare view of the assets in the system. For Profile XP or Open SAN systems,
there is a Profile view of the assets.
In the K2 storage environment, ingest is controlled by a non-NewsBrowse
application, such as Ingest Station, and can incorporate the K2 system as the video
server. The NewsBrowse SmartBin encoder transfers an incoming feed into two
formats: a proxy low-resolution (MPEG-1) format stored on the NewsBrowse proxy
NAS, and a high-resolution format stored the K2 storage system. NewsBrowse also
monitors the K2 storage to create proxy for new high-resolution material. In this way
NewsEdit master clips, subclips and sequences are represented in the NewsBrowse
system for editing and manipulation. The NewsBrowse EDL export feature creates a
News sequence directly in NewsEdit target bin.
In the Profile XP/Open SAN environment, ingest can be controlled by the
NewsBrowse application, using a Profile XP as the video server. NewsBrowse
processes an incoming feed and simultaneously encodes it into two formats: a proxy
low-resolution (MPEG-1) format stored locally on the NewsBrowse proxy NAS, and
a high-resolution format stored on the Profile XP or Open SAN. NewsBrowse also
monitors the Profile XP or Open SAN to create proxy for new high-resolution
material. In this way the high-resolution material is represented in the NewsBrowse
system for editing and manipulation, but there is no direct view of NewsEdit clips.
Once you complete a sequence with the NewsBrowse editor, NewsBrowse can use
