When you’re ready to begin, click Continue and follow the instructions you see on the screen.
Note: The Mac OS Install program automatically runs the applications Drive
Setup and Disk First Aid before starting the installation process. Prior
versions of system software required that you run these applications
separately. If you need information on how to use these applications, choose
Drive Setup Guide or Disk First Aid Guide when each application is running.
As part of the normal software installation process, the Mac OS Install
program replaces changed system files and adds new ones, but leaves others
alone. In addition, the Mac OS Install program provides an option for doing a
clean installation of system software.
IMPORTANT
You should only perform a clean installation if you have already
tried reinstalling system software as described in this section and are still
experiencing the same problems with your system. For more information on
when you should do a clean installation, see “Performing a Clean
Installation” later in this chapter.
Responding to messages about your hard disk
The Mac OS Install program checks the destination hard disk for errors
before installing the software. If your hard disk was formatted with an Apple
disk utility program, the Installer updates the hard disk drivers with the latest
version of the driver software. If your disk was formatted with a disk utility
from another company, the drivers are not updated. You should use the
third-party disk utility to update your hard disk before installing Mac OS 8.
