Cummins Engines only (follow next four steps) -
Remove the fan belt (Figure 42A) by carefully
lifting the tensioner with a 1/2 inch square drive
installed in the square hole in the tensioner
bracket.

Inspect the fan belt. Replace cracked or frayed
belt. Transverse (across belt width) cracks are
acceptable. Longitudinal (along belt length)
cracks are not acceptable.
7.
Check tensioner bearing. Spin the bearing and
check that there are no rough spots detected
under hand pressure.
8.
Check the fan hub bearing. Spin the fan and
check for wobble or excessive play. Maximum
play should be .006 inch (0,15 mm).
9.
To install the fan belt, first position the belt over
the grooved pulleys and then, while holding up the
tensioner, slide the belt over the water pump
pulley.
10. Close and lock access doors.

Engine Fan Belt Check
(Perkins - First 50 Hours and 250 Hour
Intervals Thereafter)
(Cummins - 1000 Hour Intervals)
Check fan belt condition and tension as follows:
1.
Ground the carriage, place the travel select lever
in (N) Neutral, engage the emergency brake switch
and shut off engine.
2.
Unlock and open the rear engine access doors.
3.
Inspect fan belt. Replace cracked or frayed belt.
4.
Perkins Engines only - Check belt tension midway
between crankshaft and alternator pulleys (Figure
42). Deflection should be 1/4 to 3/8 inch (6,4 to
9,4 mm) with an applied force of 13 to 15 lbs.
(6 to 7 kg). If the belt needs adjustment, loosen
both alternator mounting screws. Carefully pry the
alternator to tighten the belt and retighten screws.
Recheck belt deflection. Skip to step 10.
