b. Cummins Engines - All Naturally Aspirated
and Turbo Charged S/N 3616 and Before -
Clean area around fuel filter head. Remove
and discard the water separator and fuel filter
cannisters and the sealing rings (Figure 34).
For Turbo Charged S/N 3617 & After the
engine is equipped with a single fuel filter/
water separator cannister (Figure 34A). Clean
the sealing surfaces of the filter head. Fill the
new cannisters with clean Diesel Fuel and
lubricate the sealing rings with clean lubricating
oil. Install the filters by hand tightening only.
DO NOT over tighten.
NOTE: Mechanical over-tightening may distort the
threads or damage the sealing rings.
a. Perkins Engines - Remove hex screw in top of
filter (Figure 33), remove filter base and discard
element. Clean base and head. Position new
filter element between base and head and
install hex screw to secure parts. Remove air
from fuel system (See “Bleeding Fuel System”).

Change fuel filter element every 250
(500 maximum) hours of operation. Fuel filter
must be changed more often with water evidence
or contaminated fuel.
Unlock and open right rear engine access door.
