Windows Server 2008 - The Automatic Server Recovery issue
Figure 15 Startup and Recovery
When Boot Utilities is set in the Auto recovery section of SMH, and the System ASR (Automatic
Server Recovery) timer is enabled in the ROM-Based Setup Utility (RBSU), the server boots the
Intelligent Provisioning agents after an Automatic Server Recovery event. But, after critical events
like the memory blue screen occur, the system reboots the operating system and not the IP.
This occurs because the Automatically Restart option is enabled on the Windows operating system
as shown in the
. The system reboots or resets because the Windows Reboot
option has a higher priority than the System ASR timer. The system does not reboot utilities even
though Boot Utilities is set in the SMH. Operating system events such as a memory blue
screen or other critical operating system failures trigger this problem.
Solution
To solve this problem, disable the automatic reboot option by unchecking the Automatically Restart
checkbox in Windows Server 2008 operating system. After Automatically Restart option is
unchecked, ASR will boot to Utilities, if it is set to Boot Utilities in the SMH.
To disable Automatically Reboot option in Windows 2008 Server and to prevent blue screen error,
perform the following steps:
1.
Open the Windows Control Panel, and double-click the System icon.
2.
On the left, click Advanced System Settings, under the Tasks option.
3.
Click the Advanced tab.
4.
Under Startup and Recovery, click Settings.
