5.1.9 Rotor/Flywheel—Rotating Group
The flywheel is made of carbon/glass composite. This is mounted on a metal shaft with integral
motor-rotor and together these components form the rotating group. The rotating group is magneti-
cally levitated and centered so that it does not touch any other part while in normal operation.

5.1.10 Motor Generator
The rotor is positioned within the stator in such a way that the rotor and stator provide the
motor-generator function of the Liebert FS. The stator is liquid cooled and operates within a housing
in which air has been evacuated. Together the stator and rotor operate as a synchronous reluctance
motor-generator produces enough power for the system to supply its own internal demand and to sup-
ply to the output DC bus up to the rated power. The illustration in Figure 40 shows the four poles of
the synchronous reluctance machine.
