Chapter 6. MANAGEMENT

VIA

SNMP

6.1

Overview

The Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) is an Internet-standard, application-layer
protocol for managing devices on IP networks. An SNMP-managed network consists of three key
components:

The managed device – this includes the turboIP-G2.

The SNMP Agent — the software (i.e., MIB file) that runs on the turboIP-G2. The
turboIP-G2 SNMP Agent supports SNMPv1, SNMPv2 and SNMPv3.

The user-supplied Network Management System (NMS) — the software that runs on the
manager.

A Management Information Base (MIB) file is used for SNMP remote management of a unique
device, and consists of a tree of nodes called Object Identifiers (OIDs). Each OID provides
remote management of a particular function. These MIB files should be compiled in a user-
supplied MIB Browser or SNMP Network Monitoring System server.

6.2

MIBII Support

turboIP-G2 supports RFC 1213 (MIBII) for managing the turboIP-G2. All public OIDs in the
system, interface, IP, ICMP, TCP, UDP, and SNMP groups are supported with the exception of
the ipRouteTable OIDs which are read-only. Routes should be entered via the CLI’s routing
screen or the Web Server GUI’s Routes page instead of through the MIBII’s ipRouteTable OIDs.

6.3

Private MIB Support

The following sections describe the SNMP private (product specific) MIB as provided for the
Comtech EF Data turboIP-G2 unit. The OID tree of the turboIP-G2 private MIB is provided,
followed by the data type of each OID.
