Appendix B: KX3 Power Output Display Calibration

When the KXPA100 is connected to an Elecraft KX3 using the optional Adapter Cable as shown in Figure 3on
page 14, the KXPA100 controls the KX3 drive level required to produce the desired output. The KXPA100 is
factory calibrated to an Elecraft lab-standard KX3 transceiver. This alignment is performed separately on each
band and is generally accurate. However, if you want to calibrate your KX3 to your KXPA100, you may do so
as follows. This procedure will store drive levels in your KX3 that will over-ride the factory levels in your
KXPA100. After performing the calibration, you can return to using the original factory calibration levels if you
wish.

What You Will Need

 Firmware level 1.87 or later installed in your KX3.
 Firmware level 1.04 or later installed in your KXPA100
 50 Ohm , 100 W dummy load.

Procedure

Connect your KX3 and KXPA100 using the Adapter Cable as shown in Figure 3 on page 14.

Connect the 50 ohm dummy load to the KXPA100

ANT 1

connector.

Turn the KX3 and KXPA100 on.

Ensure the KX3 menu is set to

PA MODE:ON.

If your KXPA100 includes the KXAT100 antenna tuner, cycle through each band at the KX3 and ensure

that

ANT1

and

BYP

mode is selected for every band.

In the KX3 menu, set

PA MODE:Pout CAL

and exit the menu. .

At the KX3, select any frequency within the 1.8 MHz band.

Set the KX3

P W R

control to 75 watts. With the menu set for

PA MODE:Pout CAL

the KX3

will display

CAL 75W.

At the KX3 press

T U N E

to enter tune mode. The KX3 will transmit for a short period, then stop

automatically. During the transmission, the KX3 and KXPA100 determine what drive level from the KX3 is
required to achieve 75 watts output on that band. The drive level is saved automatically.

Repeat the above for each band. When you reach the 50 MHz band, reset the KX3’s

P W R

control as

needed for

CAL 75W

(Power output is set separately on the 50 MHz band.)

After completing the procedure on all bands, set

PA MODE:ON

in the KX3 menu.

That completes the calibration procedure. Your KX3 will now furnish the new drive levels to the KXPA100 on
each band. You can view the changes in drive power furnished by the KX3 for each band and revert to the
factory drive levels as described below.
