6 Monitoring and maintenance
This chapter provides information and instructions for monitoring and maintaining the Snapshot
system.
Monitoring the system
Monitoring helps you to keep track of your pairs and volumes in their current and past conditions.
Monitoring is an ongoing activity. There are several Snapshot elements you can monitor:

Monitoring pair status
Monitor pair status before and after performing pair operations.
•
Each operation requires a specific status or statuses. When you want to perform a pair
command, first check the pair’s status.
•
Pair-status changes when an operation is performed. Check status to see that pairs are operating
correctly and that status is changing to the appropriate state during and after the operation.
Monitoring is done manually when using the Remote Web Console GUI. It should be repeated
frequently. Email notifications of problems in pair operations can be set up using the GUI.
To monitor pair status:
1. In the Remote Web Console, click Actions > Local Copy > Business Copy/Snapshot > Pair
Operation.
NOTE: Both Snapshot and Business Copy pairs display in the pair list. Snapshot V-VOLs
display in the “S-VOL” column.
2. In the Pair Operation window, locate the pair whose status you want to review. Review pair
status in the Status column.
CAUTION: Using Monitoring Software on a Host: If a host has an application installed to monitor
the volumes of Snapshot pairs, some problems may occur:
•
An S-VOL whose status is not PSUS (or PFUS) rejects access from the host, possibly causing
problems for the monitoring application software whose access is rejected.
•
If the host computer connects to more than one port, other ports may also go offline when the
S-VOL rejects host access.
Stop the application software that monitors the volumes to solve these problems.
You can view more details by right-clicking a pair and selecting Detail. See “Monitoring pair,
volume details” (page 33) for information.
Pair status definitions
When checking your pairs’ status, click File/Refresh to make sure the data is current. P-VOL/V-VOL
access columns in the table below indicate whether the volumes accept read/write.
