HARD START — Diesel

Press IGNITION, SELECT

Hard Start

and press NEXT. Use this test to find the problem area

on a no-start engine. If Diesel was selected during

Engine Setup

, this screen will appear:

225 RPM 80û Battery 10.85 Volt

193 Amp(ZeroÛ) Aux~NEG 10.85 Volt

~ Wheel Dents: 1 Aux~POS 00.00 Volt

AC P-P 00.0 Volt

Wheel Dents is a setup for using a magnetic probe on an engine crankshaft wheel. "Dents"
are the number of notches or pins sensed by the probe in one crankshaft revolution. SELECT
sets the number of wheel dents to 1, 2, 3, or 4 so that RPM will read correctly.

TIMING

Timing inputs may come from the Stroboscopic Timing Light or from the Magnetic Top Dead
Center (TDC) Probe. Press IGNITION, SELECT

Strobe Timing

or

Mag TDC Timing,

and press

NEXT. If Diesel was selected during

Engine Setup

, only the Mag TDC choice will appear.

Stroboscopic
To read advance angle with the Stroboscopic Timing Light, set the RPM / Advance switch on
the back of the light to Advance. Shine the light at the engine wheel, and use the fingertip
control buttons on the timing light handle to move the apparent timing mark onto top dead
center. The advance angle will appear on the timing light display and on the Control Module
screen. To save timing data, press the SAVE button on the light, or the NEXT key on the
Control Module. Up to five sets of data may be saved. The rightmost numbers are live readings.
To clear the data, exit and restart the test.

Deg 10 12 10 10 16 12

RPM 890 1100 900 910 1850 1050

Press SAVE DATA to save readings.

Magnetic
If Mag TDC is selected, a menu will appear allowing selection of the probe mounting offset.
Choose one of the presets, or SELECT

Custom

and use SELECT to enter your own. The

TDC Detector is designed to work with timing wheels having either notches or pins. When the
magnetic probe is aligned with a wheel mark, the detector sends a pulse to the Diagnostic
Center and flashes an indicator lamp on the detector. When using the Magnetic TDC probe,
the screen will be similar to that for stroboscopic timing, except that the offset setting is also
shown. Pressing the SELECT key allows you to change the offset degrees without restarting
the test. To save timing data, press NEXT.
