To Operate the Unit
1.
Turn the unit on. The LED Segments will light up
momentarily, and the Polarity Indicator will remain
illuminated to indicate that the unit is on.
2.
Connect the Ground Clip to a good engine Ground.
3.
Start and Run the Engine. Note: Some tests may
require the operator to snap accelerate or change the
RPM of the engine.
4.
Press fit the KV Clip on the spark plug or coil wire of
your choice. Note: The KV Clip cannot touch any
other ignition wires except the one being tested.
5.
Read the KV reading on the Bargraph. If the Coil is
inverted (positive firing) the polarity LED will blink off.
Measurements
When connected to an engine, the LED segments will light
up to indicate the level of Firing KV being detected. Some
Segments will always be on. Some Segments will be on
most of the time, and other Segments will flicker on and
off. The following graph explains what the different LED
Segment behavior indicates.
Analysis of Test Results
If KV is low for one or more cylinders the cause could be:
Open Plug Wire at the Coil (KV will be very low downstream
of the open), Narrow or Fouled Plug Gap, or a Rich Mixture
If KV is High for one or more cylinders, the cause could be:
Open Plug Wire at the Plug (KV will be very high upstream
of the open), Wide Plug Gap, High Resistance in Plug or
Wire. A momentary high KV reading could be an indication
of an ignition miss.
If the polarity light is off on a standard ignition system check
for an improperly installed ignition coil. If the polarity light
is always on when testing both sides of a DIS coil, check
for a bad spark plug wire.
