Configuring NIS

NIS is a client-server protocol for distributing system configuration data, such
as user and host names, between computers. The network.naming service from
SunSoft™ allows resources to be added, deleted, or relocated. Formerly known
as Yellow Pages or yp, NIS is a defacto UNIX standard. NIS+ is a redesigned
NIS for Solaris™ 2.0 products. TCP/IP, NFS, and NIS comprise the primary
networking components of the UNIX client-server protocol for tracking user
and host names on a network.
