The media dependent interface (MDI) is a typical Ethernet interface provided by network adapters. The
media dependent interface crossover (MDI-X) is commonly found on hubs or LAN switches.
When the rate and negotiation mode of Ethernet copper ports are 10/100 Mbps and half-/full-duplex,
the Ethernet copper ports are operating in forced mode. When the rate of Ethernet copper ports is
1000 Mbps, or the rate and duplex mode are not specified at the same time, the Ethernet copper ports
are operating in autonegotiation mode.
No matter whether an Ethernet copper port operates in the forced or autonegotiation mode, it supports
automatic MDI/MDIX.
