Chapter 1. INTRODUCTION
1.1 Overview
Phase combining is a traditional technique that cost effectively increases the available output
power of an amplifier system. The PCB‐4000 1+1 Phase Combiner (Figure 1‐1), together with two
Solid State Power Amplifiers (SSPAs), form a complete 1+1 phase combined system that doubles
the available output power. The PCB‐4000 also features a “soft fail” configuration; i.e., if one SSPA
experiences a failure, the total output power will be reduced by only 3 dB, rather than 6 dB.
