TJ LJ FUEL TANK SKID INSTALLATION
Thank you for purchasing this Poison Spyder
Fuel Tank Skid for your Jeep. Installation
is fairly simple with the right tools and good
mechanical abilities. If you are not confident in
your mechanical skills, please seek the help of a
professional to perform the installation. Please
read through these entire instructions before
proceeding with installation.
PARTS LIST
(1) TJ LJ Fuel Tank Skid
(1) Front Support Bracket
(2) 3/8-16 X 3/4 hex head cap screw
(2) 3/8-16 nylon insert lock nut
(2) 3/8 flat washer
TOOLS NEEDED
• Floor jack
• 13mm deep socket
• 9/16 socket
• Ratchet
• 9/16 end wrench
INSTALLATION PROCEDURE
1. Locate the Front Support Bracket that was
supplied with the Fuel Tank Skid. Use the
supplied hardware to attach the bracket to
corresponding holes at the forward edge
of the fuel tank skid, with the “L” shaped lip
facing up, and it offset to the driver’s side. Be
sure to have the heads of the bolts oriented
toward the inside of the skid in order to clear
the fuel tank as the skid is slid into place. Be
sure that the bracket is only loosely bolted on
(do not tighten the fasteners at this time).
2. Use the 13mm socket and ratchet to
remove the four larger nuts off of the factory
skid plate located at the rear of the gas tank.
Note that there are also two smaller nuts--
leave these in place. Do not remove the
factory skid, it will remain installed behind the
Poison Spyder Fuel Tank Skid.
3. Position a floor jack at the rear of the Jeep,
oriented so that it may roll under the Jeep’s
fuel tank. Put a rag over the pedestal of the
floor jack, and place the fuel tank skid plate
onto the jack, with the widest edge facing
away from the rear of the Jeep. Roll the jack
and Skid under the Jeep, and use the jack to
raise the skid into place around the fuel tank
and factory skid. It may be a bit of a tight
fit, but the factory skid is made of thin metal
and somewhat flexible, so you can use some
extra force to work the Poison Spyder Skid
into place.
4. With the Skid in place, loosely thread on the
four nuts you removed in step 2. Then lower
the jack, allowing the skid to hang from the
two nuts that were loosely installed.
5. At the front of the fuel tank, locate the two
nuts holding the front of the factory skid plate
on to the frame crossmember. Remove
these two nuts.
6. Use the jack to raise the forward end of
the Skid back into place. Once it is seated
correctly, reinstall the two nuts that were
removed in step 5.
7. Tighten all hardware. This includes the
four nuts at the rear of the Skid, the two nuts
at the front of the skid, and the two sets of
nuts, bolts and washers that attach the Front
Support Bracket to the Skid (tighten these
with the 9/16 socket, ratchet and wrench).
IMPORTANT: The Fuel Tank Skid was designed
for use on Jeeps with at least 2” of suspension
lift. CHECK THE CLEARANCE BETWEEN
THE FUEL TANK SKID AND THE REAR DIFF
COVER under full compression. Poison Spyder
Customs is NOT responsible for damaged
components due to negligent installation or on
Jeeps that do not meet the 2” suspension lift
requirement.
