Appendix 4 Glossary
Term
Explanation
802.1X
IEEE standard. Port-Based Network Access Control.
Access point
Device that relays inter-station communication. Usually, this device has a function
that makes a bridge to a wired LAN network.
Ad hoc mode
In this mode, stations communicate directly with each other, not via the access point.
AP
Acronym of Access Point. See "Access point."
Authentication Server
Term defined in 802.1X. Server that is doing authentication. This server
corresponds to the RADIUS server in this product.
Authenticator
Term defined in 02.1X. The authenticator arranges the authentication procedure
between the supplicant and authentication server. It permits only the supplicant
authenticated by the authentication server to communicate. It corresponds to the
access point in this product.
Beacon
Management network packets that are periodically transmitted from the access point
to all stations.
CA
Abbreviation of Certificate Authority. It is also called a certificate organization.
This server issues a digital certificate.
EAP
Abbreviation of Extensible Authentication Protocol. This standard is intended to
consistently handle the authentication procedure by putting various authentication
protocols into a capsule.
EAP-TLS
Authentication method using TLS. The authentication server checks whether the
supplicant has the correct digital certificate.
EAPOL
Abbreviation of EAP over LANs. Term defined in 802.1X. This specification is to
exchange EAP packets in the LAN environment.
ESSID
Acronym for Extended Service Set ID. See "Network name."
Infrastructure mode
In this mode, stations communicate via the access point.
MD5-Challenge
Authentication method using the MD5 algorithm. The authentication server checks
whether the user name and password of the supplicant are correct.
Network name
Identifier that logically identifies a wireless LAN network. In infrastructure mode,
both station and access point must have the same name.
This identifier may be called ESSID.
PC
Acronym of Personal Computer.
RADIUS
Abbreviation of Remote Authentication Dial In User Service. It indicates a user
authentication protocol or authentication server. In this product, it is used to
authenticate the stations.
Roaming
When a wireless station leaves the reception area of one access point and moves to
another, all communication is handed over to the new access point so that no data is
lost. This functionality is called roaming.
SAP
Acronym of Software Access Point.
STA
Acronym of STAtion. See "Station."
