Appendix F Measuring in Brabender Units (BU)
RST-SST Rheometers have firmware that will recognize spindle geometry RSS-90Y for testing according
to ASTM C474.
The RSS-90Y spindle has three parts:
-
Spindle Adapter (which connects to the rheometer)
-
BU Spindle Type A
-
Thumb Screw (which secures the Spindle in the Spindle Adapter).

A typical test runs for 60 seconds at 78 RPM. The Brabender Unit value at the end of the time interval is
recorded.
The measurement unit is the “BU”, which replaces the shear stress value on the rheometer display. BU is
calculated by multiplying the torque by 1. The multiplier, which is called the BU Factor, is the default
setting, but may be adjusted if necessary.
