Checking the Basics

NOTE: To perform these troubleshooting tasks, you must connect a keyboard, mouse,
and monitor to your system.

If your Dell PowerVault 735N Network Attached Storage (NAS) appliance is not work-
ing as expected, begin troubleshooting using the procedures in this chapter. This
chapter guides you through some initial checks and procedures that can solve basic
problems with your system. It can also direct you to the appropriate chapter for
detailed troubleshooting information and procedures to solve more complex
problems.

NOTE: When you see the question “Is the problem resolved?” in a troubleshooting
procedure, perform the operation that caused the problem.

Backing Up Files

If the system is behaving erratically, back up the files on the hard-disk drives immedi-
ately. See the

Dell PowerVault 735N NAS Appliance System Administrator’s Guide

or

the documentation for your backup software for more information on backing up your
data.

Basic Checks

The following procedure leads you through the checks necessary to solve some basic
problems:

Does the status indicator on the Dell PowerVault 735N NAS appliance NAS Man-
ager indicate a status that is not normal?

Yes

. Check the event logs. See the

for more information.

No

. Go to step 2.

2.

Is the system wet or damaged?

Yes. Go to Chapter 5, “Checking the Equipment.”

No

. Go to step 3.
