EZ-SCREEN Point

Instruction Manual

Glossary of Terms

Machine secondary control element (MSCE): A ma chine con trol

element in de pen dent of the Machine Primary Control Element(s)

(MPCEs), capable of removing the source of power from the prime

mover of the relevant dangerous machine parts.

MPCE monitor contacts: The normally closed contacts of

a guarded machine’s MPCEs which are con nect ed to the

EZ-SCREEN System EDM inputs. These contacts must be

mechanically linked to the control elements (forced-guided).

Muting: The automatic suspension of the safeguarding function

of a safety device during a non-hazardous portion of the

machine cycle .

OFF state: The state in which the output circuit is interrupted and

does not permit the flow of current.

ON state: The state in which the output circuit is complete and

permits the flow of current.

OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration); OSHA

CFR 1910.217: Occupational Safety and Health Ad min is tra tion (a

US Federal agency), Division of the US De part ment of Labor, that

is re spon si ble for the regulation of workplace safety. OSHA reg u-

la tions often follow ANSI stan dards, in clud ing me chan i cal power

press requirements (OSHA CFR 1910.217). These regulations

become law when adopted by OSHA, and must be followed.

Output signal switching device (OSSD): The component of the

electro-sensitive protective equipment (ESPE) connected to the

control system of the machine which, when the sensing device

is actuated during normal operation, responds by going to the

OFF-state.
Point of operation: The area of the guarded machine where a

workpiece is positioned and a machine function (e.g., shearing,

form ing, punch ing, assembling, welding) is performed upon it.

Protected height: The distance between the center of the top

beam and the center of the bottom beam of a light grid .

PSDI (Presence-Sens ing-De vice Ini ti a tion): An ap pli ca tion in

which a presence-sensing device is used to actually start the cycle

of a machine. In a typical situation, an operator manually positions

a part in the machine for the operation. When the operator moves

out of the hazardous area, the presence-sensing device starts

the machine (no start switch is used). The machine cycle runs to

completion, and the operator can then insert a new part and start

another cycle. The presence-sensing device continually guards the

ma chine. Sin gle break mode is used when the part is au to mat i cal ly

ejected after the machine operation. Double break mode is used

when the part is both in sert ed (to begin the operation) and removed

(after the op er a tion) by the op er a tor. PSDI is defined in OSHA

CFR 1910.217. Banner EZ-SCREEN Systems

may not be used as

PSDI de vic es on mechanical power presses, per OSHA reg u la tion

29 CFR 1910.217.

Qualified Person: A person or persons who, by possession of a

rec og nized degree or certificate of professional training, or who, by

extensive knowl edge, training, and experience, has suc cess ful ly

dem on strat ed the ability to solve problems re lat ing to the subject

matter and work.

Receiver: The light-receiving component of the EZ-SCREEN Point

System, consisting of a synchronized phototransistor.

Reset: The use of a manually operated switch to restore the OSSDs

to the ON state from a lock out or a latch condition .

Self-checking (circuitry): A circuit with the capability to elec tron-

i cal ly verify that all of its own critical circuit com po nents, along

with their redundant backups, are operating prop er ly. Ban ner EZ-

SCREEN Systems are self-checking.

Separation distance: That distance, along the direction of

ap proach, between the out er most position at which the ap pro pri ate

test piece will just be detected and the nearest dangerous machine

parts . Also called safety distance .

Single-stroke press: See full-revolution devices.

Supplemental guarding: Additional electrosensitive safety

device(s), and/or hard guarding measures, used for the purpose of

preventing a person from entering or remaining in the hazard area

undetected .

Test piece: An opaque object of sufficient size used to block the

light beam. in order to test the operation of the EZ-SCREEN Point

System .

UL (Underwriters Laboratory): A third-party organization which

tests a man u fac tur er’s products for com pli ance with ap pro pri ate

Standards, elec tri cal and/or safety codes. Com pli ance is indicated

by their listing mark on the product .
