To type a character with a diacritical mark (such as an acute accent
or an umlaut), you press the Option key along with a specific
letter key, and then type the character.

Diacritical mark

Grave accent ( ` )

Option–`, then type the character

Acute accent ( ´ )

Option–e, then type the character

Circumflex (^)

Option–i, then type the character

Tilde (~)

Option–n, then type the character

Umlaut ( ¨ )

Option–u, then type the character

The letter “c” with a cedilla (ç)

Option–c

If the character appears

after the diacritical mark (rather than

with it), then the marked character is not available in the font
you’re using.
