Replacing the RTC battery

A lithium battery, installed on the motherboard, provides power for the
real-time clock (RTC) and CMOS. The battery lasts for several years.
When the battery starts to weaken and the voltage drops below a certain
level, you may notice that the date and time are wrong. This is an
indication that the battery needs replacing.

If you replace the battery incorrectly, it can cause personal injury or
damage the system. Always use the same or an equivalent type of battery.
Never expose batteries to fire or excessive heat.

The following procedure assumes you have opened the case and are
observing ESD precautions. (Refer to Opening the case)
To replace the battery:
1. Locate the battery on the motherboard. See Motherboard for the

location of the battery.

2. Press the latch away from the battery until the battery partially pops

out, then gently pull the battery from its socket.

Take care to note the “+” on the top of the battery; the replacement
battery will also be installed with the “+” electrode on the top.

3. Install the new battery in the socket. Slide the battery into the socket

with the side opposite the latch first, then press down gently on the
centre of the battery to seat the battery securely in the socket.

4. Reassemble the panels and turn the computer back on.
5. Run the Setup program and reset the system time and date.
6. Information about your computer’s BIOS and using the BIOS Setup

program is available from Toshiba’s online customer support at
www.support.toshiba.com.

Dispose of used batteries in a safe, environmentally responsible manner.
Your company may have a procedure for this. If not, check with your local
government for information on where to recycle or dispose of old
batteries.
