Installation requirements
This section addresses system requirements for installing the Rescue and Recovery package on Lenovo
or non-Lenovo computers. For best results, make sure that you have the latest version of the Rescue and
Recovery program installed. To download the latest version of the Rescue and Recovery program, and
obtain information about the computers that support the Rescue and Recovery program, go to the following
Web site: http://www.lenovo.com/thinkvantage
Requirements for installation on Lenovo computers
To install the Rescue and Recovery program on Lenovo computers, your system must meet or exceed the
following requirements:
• Windows Vista ® operating system or Windows XP with Service Pack 1 (SP1) or later operating system
• 128 MB of memory for the Windows XP operating system, and 512 MB of memory for the Windows
Vista operating system
– In shared memory configurations, the BIOS setting for maximum shared memory must be set to no
less than 8 MB.
– In non-shared memory configurations, the BIOS setting for maximum shared memory must be set to
no less than 120 MB.
Note: If a computer has less than 200 MB of non-shared memory, the Rescue and Recovery program
will still run; however, the user will be unable to start more than one application in the Rescue and
Recovery environment.
• Internet Explorer® Web browser 5.5 or later
• 2.4 GB of free hard disk drive space
Note: If you are installing the Rescue and Recovery program on the service partition, see “Scenario 3 -
Installing on Type 12 service partition” on page 82 for more information on installation requirements.
Requirements for installation on non-Lenovo computers
To install the Rescue and Recovery program on non-Lenovo computers, your systems should meet or
exceed the following requirements:
• Installation requirements2.4 GB of free hard disk drive space. The base installation uses 930 MB.
• Minimum system memory requirements256 MB of system RAM (random-access memory) to install the
Rescue and Recovery program.
• Hard disk drive configurationConfigure the non-Lenovo computers according to the recommendations
in “Scenario 2 - Installing on OEM systems” on page 80.
• External media requirementsYou are enabled to boot from external media, such as CD, DVD, or USB
hard disk drive bootable media. Other devices, such as CD-R/RW, DVD-R/RW/RAM, or DVD+R/RW
drives, must fully support one or more of the following specifications:
– ATAPI Removable Media Device BIOS Specification
– BIOS Enhanced Disk Drive Services - 2
– Compaq Phoenix Intel BIOS Boot Specification
– El Torito Bootable CD-ROM Format Specification
– USB Mass Storage Class Specification Overview (Each device must comply with the command block
specification in section 2 “Subclass code ” in the USB Mass Storage Class Specification Overview
document.)
