Chapter 2. Installation
Prior to installing the Rescue and Recovery program, you can customize the Rescue and Recovery XML
file for your enterprise and then deploy it to client systems. The XML file packaged with the Rescue and
Recovery program is named the rnrdeploy.xml file. Once the XML file is customized and installed, settings
for the Rescue and Recovery program are managed with the registry or Active Directory.
For more information, see the XML/ADM Supplement inside the ThinkVantage
Technologies Administrator Tools, which can be downloaded from the following Web site:
Installation considerations
This section addresses the considerations of installing the Rescue and Recovery program.
Upgrading consideration
If you are installing the Rescue and Recovery 4.23 program on a computer with the Rescue and Recovery
4.0 or later installed, you can install the Rescue and Recovery 4.23 program directly without uninstalling the
previous version. If you are installing the Rescue and Recovery 4.23 program over version 3.1 or earlier, you
are recommended to uninstall the previous version through the Windows Add or Remove Programs applet
and then install the Rescue and Recovery 4.23 program.
Notes:
1. Create a new backup after installing the Rescue and Recovery 4.23 program to your system, because
backup files created by earlier versions of the Rescue and Recovery program cannot be recovered by
the Rescue and Recovery 4.23 program. You can create the backup using either a script or the user
interface.
2. The old backups created by an earlier version of the Rescue and Recovery program will be deleted
during the installation. If you want to retain the ability to restore from backups created by an earlier
version of the Rescue and Recovery program, you must copy your backup files to bootable, external
recovery media before installing the latest version.
Compatibility with Computrace, Storage Management Subsystem, and
Windows Recovery Console
The Rescue and Recovery program only works with the non-BIOS version of the Computrace application
installed on your system. When you install the Computrace application, make sure that you install the
Rescue and Recovery program first and then the Computrace application.
If the Windows PE creates a virtual partition on a computer to install the Rescue and Recovery program,
and you attempt to install the Storage Management Subsystem software on the same computer, then the
Storage Management Subsystem software will not be installed successfully. Both the Windows PE and the
Storage Management Subsystem software use the C:\minint directory for their file systems. The way to
have both installed at the same time is to create a type 12 partition to install the Rescue and Recovery 4.23
program. See “Scenario 4 - Installing with WIM files and Windows Vista” on page 83 for instructions.
A possible security risk may be created when the Windows Recovery Console is installed on a system
with the Rescue and Recovery program installed. The Windows Recovery Console looks for the
C:\*\system32\config\ directory, and if it finds that directory, it assumes the system is an operating system. If
the registry entries that require a Windows password are not present, then the Windows Recovery Console
