If instead of the horizontal speed is taken the speed through the air, the error is 2%
at glide ratio 5 and just only 0,5% at glide ratio 10. This small inaccuracy is insignificant
and may be disregarded
Glide ratio values achievable in steady air with following aircraft:

Hang glider

Within the user defined display fields the glide ratio may also be selected.
The following facts are applicable:
Glide ratio though the air:
L/D
air
= TAS/Sink True airspeed divided by Sink
Glide ratio over Ground :
L/D
gnd
= GS/Sinken
Speed over Ground divided by Sink
Required glide ratio over Ground from momentary position to selected WP
.
L/D
req
= Distance to the WP / Height difference to WP
Example for explanation of glide ratio values
2.7.5 Speed to Fly for best Glide
The thick arrow visible on the hand right side of the analogue speed scale informs the pilot
about the speed for best glide, dependent on the polar, the wind and rising resp. sinking
of surrounding air. In Competition, a pilot will always fly faster than this speed indicator
is recommending, except when every meter of height is essential. Please also read under:
9.5.1 Polar and Speed to Fly. It is negligible whether the pilot has chosen to set the display
on true or indicated air speed, because the FLYTEC 6030 GPS shall indicate at any altitude
and steady air the same value for best glide. However for True Airspeed the speed
recommendation will increase gradually in accordance to increasing altitude. (Please
see also: 9.3.1 True or Indicated Air Speed – TAS or IAS.
