4.3 Assigning an IP Address to the Transponder
The Dual IP transponder will obtain its IP address by utilizing Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol
(DHCP). Also, as specified in the RFC2132 specification, the transponder will request subnet mask and
router information.
In addition, if the transponder is to be configured by using values in an HMS initialization file (typically
named hmsinit.ini), the DHCP server should populate the “bootfile” name field with the name of the
initialization file to be used (for more details, refer to
Section 1.9, Configuration File Choices).
4.4 Community Strings
Three different community strings can be set: Read/Write, Read, and Discovery. These HMS strings
grant the operator rights to the SCTE-HMS side of the transponder. These SCTE-HMS strings can be
either identical to or independent from the community strings used to access the cable modem side of the
transponder.
In cases where the same operator or group manages both the DOCSIS and SCTE-HMS data
environment, the cable operator might choose to have the cable modem and the SCTE-HMS strings be
the same. In cases where there is a separate IP and HFC staff, the operator might want the strings to be
different to preserve IP security.
Parameter

Read/Write
Community
Setting this parameter grants R/W
access to the HMS side of the
transponder.
Optional
Any combination
of upper, and/or
lowercase. Special
characters can be
used. Maximum length
is 25 characters.
Read
Community
Setting this parameter grants Read-
Only access to the HMS side of the
transponder.
Optional unless Read-
Only access is required by
customer.
Discovery
Community
Setting this paramerer allows certain
Cheetah management software
applications to interact (both Read
and Write) with the HMS side of the
transponder.
Optional unless Cheetah
management software
applications are used.
