Transplanting the News Database
This appendix describes how to transplant the News Database from a File
System Manager (FSM) to a Database System Manager (DSM).
Before You Transplant the Database
The NewsShare version must be 5.0 or higher in order to support split
FSM/DSM operation on an Open SAN system. This discussion pertains to the
database and not to the shared volume or the elemental media. Resist the
temptation to perform the database backup and restore operations using the SQL
Server Enterprise Manager GUI—though crude, the command-line utilities
perform these operations in a specific and tested way. Do not conflate this
transplant procedure with a possible version upgrade: upgrade first; transplant
second.
Overview
To transplant the News Database:
1. Establish the DSM.
2. Create a backup from the working FSM.
3. Install the backup onto the DSM.
4. Perform an interim test and client update.
5. Drop the old news database from the FSMs.
6. Verify the operation.
The following sections describe each step in detail.
