Crimping Shielded RJ-45 Plugs onto 8-Wire STP CAT5 Cable
Step Description
1
Preparation: Assemble appropriate materials:
• length of shielded twisted pair (STP) CAT5 cable
• CAT5
plug
• wire
cutters/strippers
• crimping
tool
• Multimeter/continuity
tester
2
Strip: At one end of the CAT5 cable, carefully remove approximately one
inch of the cable jacket, exposing the foil shield.
3
Foil: Carefully pull back the foil shield onto the remaining cable jacket,
exposing the unshielded drain wire and the eight individually shielded wires.
4
Drain Wire: Select the unshielded drain wire and wrap it around the foil
shield.
5
Separate: Untwist a portion of each pair of wires (to approximately 1/8
″
from the jacket).
6
Arrange: Arrange the individual wires according to the associated TAP or
DATA connection specifications (refer to Appendix A). Be sure to flatten the
individual conductors to facilitate their insertion into the RJ45 plug.
7
Trim: Using the wire cutters, trim perpendicularly across the eight
conductors, ensuring that each conductor is of equal length. Be sure to
leave enough of the conductors for insertion into the RJ45 plug
(approximately 1/2
″).
8
Insert: Insert the wires (and about 1/4
″ of the cable jacket, for strain relief)
into the CAT 5 plug. Ensure that the orientation is correct between each tine
of the plug and each wire in the CAT5 cable.
9
Crimp: Using the crimping tool, secure the RJ45 plug to the CAT5 cable.
10
Repeat: Repeat the process for the other end of the cable, if needed.
11
Test: Using a multimeter or continuity tester, verify that each line of the
cable is connected and operating properly.
