A. Checking engine oil level
7 H P B R IG G S & S TR A TTO N :
1. S top engine and allow to cool.
2. Level the base of the engine.
3.
R em ove oil fill plug from either
side of engine (clean plug before
rem oving.) S ee P hoto 6-48.
4. O il level should be at overflow
point of oil fill tube. If not, slow ly
add oil until it reaches overflow
point.
5. R eplace oil fill plug securely.
8 H P K O H LE R :
1. S top engine and allow to cool.
2. W hile on level ground, m ove
D epth R egulator Lever all the w ay
dow n until it engages top notch in
lever. This places base of engine at
a slight angle.
3. R em ove dipstick (clean area
around dipstick before rem oving)
and w ipe clean.
4. R einsert dipstick and push it ail
the w ay dow n into tube. R em ove
dipstick and check level. O il should
be up to, but not over, the “F” m ark
on dipstick. S ee Photo 6-49. If below
“F” m ark, slow ly add oil, checking
level frequently w ith dipstick. D o
not operate engine w ith oil level
below “L” m ark or over “F” m ark.
5. R eplace the dipstick securely.
B. Changing engine oil
1. D rain the oil w hile the engine is
still w arm from recent operation as
w arm oil drains m ore easily and
also carries aw ay m ore im purities.
B e sure to stop the engine before
changing the oil.
2. There are tw o oil drain plugs,
one on each side of the engine.
E ither plug m ay be used.
N O TE: The 7 H P B riggs & S tratton
engine is equipped w ith a balance
w eight located beneath the engine
base (P hoto 6-50).
To prevent a m essy spill w hen
draining the oil, either tem porarily
rem ove the w eight, or fashion a
drain trough from a piece of alum i
num foil or cardboard and hold it
beneath the drain hole w hile the oil

drains. B e sure to replace the bal
ance w eight w hen finished.
3. P lace a board beneath the
w heel opposite the drain plug you
are using.
4. P lace a pan beneath the drain
plug.
5.
R em ove oil fill plug (7 H P en
gine) or dipstick (8 H P engine) to
vent crankcase.
6. R em ove the drain plug and
allow all of the oil to drain into the
pan. S ee Photo 6-50 or 6-51.
7. C lean the drain plug threads and
reinstall it in the drain hole. M ake
sure that you tighten it securely.
8. R efill the engine crankcase w ith
fresh oil as explained in the previ
ous “C hecking Engine O il Level”
instructions.
9. R einstall plug or dipstick.
