Packer
The packer travels on the ground between the drive
wheels. When set properly the packer helps to take
some of the weight off of the drive wheels. This re-
sults in firm soil across the full width of the drill and
helps to minimize wheel tracks.
Refer to Figure 29
1.
Operate drill at planting depth for a few meters.
2.
Remove the top pin to allow the packer to rest
on the soil surface.
3.
Visually note, or mark which ever hole lines up
best with one of the slots.
4.
Raise the drill a little and insert the pin in the
next hole up from the hole you marked.
5.
Lower the drill and insert the top pin in a lower
hole to remove travel of packer when drill is
raised and lowered.
Seed-Lok Lock Up
Refer to Figure 30
Optional Seed-Lok firming wheels provide addition-
al seed-to-soil contact. The wheels are spring
loaded and do not require adjusting. In some wet
and sticky conditions the wheels may accumulate
soil.
To lock up firming wheels, hook one end of chain in
the opener-body hole just above the wheel arm (1).
Pull firming-wheel arm (2) up as high as possible
and wrap chain around arm. Hook other end of
chain in a link. Leave no slack in chain; secure
wheel arm in its highest position.
Setting the Seeding Rate
Calibrating the seeding rate requires four steps:
• set correct drive type,
• setting seed-rate handle,
• positioning seed-cup doors, and
• checking seeding rate.
Refer to the seed-rate charts starting on page 34.
These charts list proper sprocket sizes and seed-
rate-handle settings for various seeds and seeding
rates.
The seed-rate charts are based on cleaned, un-
treated seed of average size and test weight. The
charts are based on 395/55B 16.5 12 Ply tires.
