throughput
The effective data transfer rate measured in bps. This rate is a
combination of the connection rate and data compression. A compressed
version of a file transfers more quickly than an uncompressed version even
though the connection rate is the same.
tone-dialing
A method of dialing by sending dual-tone modulated frequency
(DTMF) signals over the phone line.

V.32
A CCITT protocol defining the frequency and modulation used between
two high-speed modems (9600, 4800 bps).
V.32 bis
A CCITT protocol defining the frequency and modulation used
between two high-speed modems (7200, 12000, 14400 bps).
V.42
A CCITT error control protocol.
V.42 bis
A CCITT data compression protocol.

XModem
A protocol devised by Ward Christianson to send files from one
computer to another that informs you if an error occurs. Also known as
MODEM7.
XON/XOFF
A handshake protocol (transmit-On/transmit-Off) used by
computers and intelligent terminals to control the flow of data between the
systems.
Y
Y-connector
A special connector that converts one jack into two, so that two
phone lines can be plugged into one receptacle. Also known as a Y-jack.
