I have trouble connecting to the remote modem
m Make sure you are calling the correct telephone number. Verify that the
number has not been discontinued.
m You may need to type a digit, such as a 0 or 9, at the beginning of the
telephone number to get an outside line.
m Make sure that the number you’re dialing connects to a modem and not to
a regular telephone. Try calling the modem number from a regular
telephone. If you hear a high-pitched tone after you dial, you have reached
another modem.
m If the problem persists, try the recommendation on “Connecting to older
modems” later in this appendix.
Do not reconnect a faulty modem until it has been repaired. If you leave a
faulty modem connected when it is adversely affecting the telephone line, the
telephone company may disconnect your service until you have corrected the
problem.
I have trouble connecting to a remote fax
m If telephone line quality is poor, you may need to send the fax several
times.
m The high-speed fax feature (V.17) allows you to send and receivg at 14400
bps. If the remote fax does not support V.17, turn it off in Fax Terminal
Preferences.
m Error Corrected Mode (ECM) permits sending and receiving under poor
conditions and over cellular lines. If the remote modem does not support
ECM, turn it off in Fax Terminal Preferences.
Try sending faxes with both V.17 and ECM turned on. If you encounter
difficulties, turn off V.17 first. If the problem persists, turn off ECM.
