Auto-answer is set differently for each type of communications program. If
you want to set auto-answer yourself, use the following table as a guide.

You may also want to turn off auto-answer when your modem shares the line
with a telephone to make sure that the modem does not answer your
incoming calls before you do. Installing a separate phone line just for the
modem is another solution.

Answering manually

Communications software programs contain an Auto-Answer command that
sets your modem to manage calls automatically. The Auto-Answer command
sets your modem’s S0 register.

The modem cannot auto-answer a call if its S0 register is set to 0. In this case,
a communications program must be open and must issue the ATA command
in order to answer a call. (See Appendix B for information on the ATA
command—and all the AT commands.)
