bit
A binary digit (0 or 1); the smallest possible information unit, consisting
of a simple two-way choice, such as yes or no, on or off.
bitmapped fonts
Characters composed of pixel maps. As size is increased,
character edges become more jagged.
blind dialing
Blind dialing allows the modem to dial out even when no dial
tone can be detected.
bps (bits per second)
The basic unit for measurement of digital data
communications transfer rate. Usually refers to the rate at which the
information is transmitted. Sometimes inaccurately refered to as the baud
rate.
buffer
The memory region for temporarily storing data for display or later
use.
C
carrier
A signal of known characteristics (for example, frequency) that is
altered (modulated) to transmit information.
CCITT
Comité Consultatif International Télégraphique et Téléphonique, an
international organization that devises and proposes recommendations for
international telecommunications.
CCL
An abbreviation for communications control language. This language is
used to write connect sequence files, sometimes called CCL files or scripts.
channel
(1) In data communications, a one-way path in data communications
along which signals can be sent between two or more points. Contrast with
circuit. (2) In telecommunications, a one- or two-way transmission path
between two or more points. Provided by a common carrier; also called a
link, line, circuit, or facility.
character
Any symbol that has a widely understood meaning. Some
characters, such as letters, numbers, and punctuation, can be displayed on the
monitor screen and printed on a printer. Others are used to control various
functions of the computer (see control character).
checksum
A method that confirms that a unit of data contains the correct
information.
