The Energy Saver control panel continuously displays and dismisses dialog boxes as if
you had pressed the Return key during a scheduled shutdown or a shutdown that was
initiated because the computer was idle.
The Document Auto-Save feature that automatically saves any open unsaved
documents when the computer shuts down has experienced a problem. To
return to normal operation, click the mouse button or press the Space bar on
the keyboard.
You can’t start an application program or it quits unexpectedly. Or when you try to open
a program, you see a message that not enough memory is available.
One of the following is probably the cause:
m The Macintosh ran out of memory.
Quit the programs that you have open and then open the program you want
to use, or restart your Macintosh.
Make sure virtual memory is turned on in the Memory control panel.
For more information on virtual memory, see “Increasing Memory
Available to Run Applications,” under “Working With Several Applications
at a Time” in Chapter 4 of this manual, and the “Memory” topic area of
Macintosh Guide, available in the Guide (h) menu.
m The program needs more memory.
Use the program’s Get Info window to give it more memory. For more
information on increasing a program’s memory, see the “Memory” topic
area of Macintosh Guide, available in the Guide (h) menu.
m An incompatible system extension or control panel is causing a problem.
To temporarily turn off all system extensions, restart your computer while
holding down the Shift key. If your program works normally after you do
this, use the Extensions Manager control panel (in the Control Panels
folder in the Apple [K] menu) to turn on individual extensions and control
panels. Restart after you turn on each extension. This procedure helps you
identify incompatible extensions and control panels. (If you just added new
software to your computer, its system extension is the most probable cause
of the problem.)
If your program performs better when a particular extension or control
panel is turned off, contact the software’s manufacturer for information or
an upgrade.
