Troubleshooting

This chapter provides you with hints and tips if your computer does not perform as it should. It
also provides the resources you need if the problem is more serious.

Some problems you may encounter when using the computer are relatively easy to identify and
solve. Others may require help from your dealer or the manufacturer of a software program.

This chapter aims to help you solve many problems yourself without additional help. It covers the
problems you are most likely to encounter.

Read the section headings, then go to that section covering the problem. Each section describes
a problem and provides a solution. Read the section and see if it describes your problem. If so,
follow the steps for solving it.

Read the manuals

It is very difficult to provide a fail-

safe set of steps you can follow every time you experience

a problem with the computer. Your ability to solve problems will improve as you learn about how
the computer and its software work together.

Get familiar with all the manuals provided with the computer, as well as the manuals that come
with the programs and devices you purchase.

Your computer store or book store sells a variety of self-

help books you can use to supplement the

information in the manuals.

Defend yourself against viruses

Viruses, while a potential problem, need not have a devastating effect on the computer. By taking
a few, simple precautions, you can avoid infection. By making sure you have a complete backup
of all your programs and data files, you can ensure a speedy recovery if you do run into problems.

There are many virus-

removal programs available. Ask your dealer for help in selecting

one that meets your needs.

Take a break

If a problem is taking a long time to solve, stop. Stand up and take a deep breath. Often, you can
find a solutions to a problem just by stepping away from it for a few moments.

Problems that are easy to fix

The more you work with the computer, the more likely you are to encounter one or more of the
following problems. You can resolve them relatively easily.
