Specifying the Tonic

When playing with tuning other than equal temperament, you
need to specify the tonic note for tuning the song to be
performed (that is, the note that corresponds to C for a major
key or to A for a minor key).
If you choose an equal temperament, there’s no need to select
a tonic note.

4.

While holding down the [E. Piano] button,
press the [-] button or [+] button to select the
tonic note.

When performing in ensemble with other
instruments, be aware that depending on the key,
there may be some shifting of the pitch.

Tune the DP-990 to the fundamental pitch of the
other instruments.

Pianos are generally tuned so that the low range is flatter and
the high range is sharper than equal tempered pitches. This
method of tuning is unique to the piano, and is known as
“stretched tuning.”

1.

Hold down the [Brilliance] button and press
the [3D] button.

The display will indicate “Fnc” and you’ll be in Function
mode.

2.

Press the [Organ] button.

The display will indicate “Str” and then the value of the
setting will appear.

3.

Use the [-] [+] buttons to change the setting.

5

Kirnberger

This is an improvement of the
Meantone and Just tunings that
provides a high degree of freedom
of modulation. Performances are
possible in all keys (III).

6

Meantone

This scale makes some
compromises in just intonation,
enabling transposition to other
keys.

7

Pythagorean

This tuning, devised by the
philosopher Pythagoras, eliminates
dissonance in fourths and fifths.
Dissonance is produced by third-
interval chords, but melodies are
euphonious.

8

Werkmeister

This temperament combines the
Meantone and Pythagorean
tunings. Performances are possible
in all keys (first technique, III).

Explanation

This tuning curve expands the bass and treble ends
somewhat. It is suitable for performances such as
piano solos.

This is the standard tuning curve. This is suitable for
when using Dual performance (p. 35) or when
playing in an ensemble with other instruments.
